Kim Coleman & Jenny HogarthResponse To Detroit
The eight LUX Associate Artists interpreted the realities and practicalities of buying a property in Detroit differently, each devising an interpretation of how the initial concept could/would be acted out as a group. We ended up with a series of widely varying ideas and plans, each the outcome of distanced research. Our response to the project ‘Detroit’ is to reflect upon the process of interpretation.
As artists working collaboratively we make decisions together. The work we will make for this project is based on the fundamentals of these exchanges and the process of interpreting another’s idea. It will be made in the context of two separate journeys: whilst we travel separately; in America, and in Canada; over two weeks in September.
We will communicate daily via the Internet using software such as Skype and a blog. With each interaction we will give the other an idea or instruction to create a video, building two sets of moving images made from the same instruction but in different places. We will consider elements of each journey that mirror each other, in particular those relating to the fundamentals of travel.
The videos will be shared on the blog as we make them, allowing the two journeys to be seen as a chain of overlapping events with its own narrative whilst we are still creating the work. The videos may reveal the gaps between where we are, what we instruct each other to do and what we actually do, relating to the individual or personal journey of the authors however abstractly or indirectly.
